Every city tour on this site stops at the Golden Gate Bridge. Whether you see it depends less on the tour than on the month and the hour.
The weather notes below come from the National Park Service page for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which covers the bridge, Lands End and the Presidio. Tour times come from the operators' listings, checked in October 2026.
The quick answer
Mid-September through October is the clearest stretch of the year, the NPS says. From July the fog covers the coast; winter brings rain and overcast days. Clocks go back on 1 November 2026, so afternoon tours lose daylight from then on. In foggy months, morning tours run the highest risk of a white-out at the bridge.
When is fog season in San Francisco?
Summer. The NPS says that by July, fog predominates in most coastal areas, and it lasts into early September.
The NPS weather page for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area puts it in one line: "By July, summer fog begins to predominate in most coastal areas of the park." The coast is exactly where the tours go: the bridge, Lands End, the Presidio and Sutro Heights.
On the coach tour, one guest in August 2025 wrote that the guide "got us the best views as the fog swept in over the city".
| Months | What the NPS says | For a city tour |
|---|---|---|
| July to early September | "Summer fog begins to predominate" | Bridge often hidden; bring a jacket |
| Mid-September to October | "Clear and brilliant sunshine is abundant" | Best views of the year |
| November to March | "Occasional rain, cool weather, and overcast skies punctuated by brilliant sunshine" | Closed vehicles beat the open top deck |
| March to early June | Trees bloom from March; wildflowers peak April to early June | Good for Lands End and the parks |
Is October a good time for a San Francisco city tour?
Yes. It's the clearest month. The NPS says fall skies are clear from mid-late September through October.
The quote is on the NPS page: "Starting in mid-late September and continuing through October, the fall skies are clear and brilliant sunshine is abundant." That's the window right now. If you're in town this month, book the tour with the most viewpoints: Vantigo stops at Coit Tower, the bridge and Twin Peaks, and Gray Line crosses the bridge to Vista Point.
Bring a layer anyway. The bridge and Twin Peaks stops are exposed to the wind.

Should you book a morning or an afternoon tour?
Afternoon in summer and spring, when morning fog is common; either in October.
A guest on the Gray Line tour in May 2026 put it bluntly: "San Francisco weather is very foggy and clouded in the mornings until midday, so many of the places we went we were not able to see a lot."
The start times differ a lot. Gray Line leaves at 8:40 a.m. Vantigo has morning and afternoon departures. The afternoon small-group tour starts at 1:30 p.m. with hotel pickup. The Big Bus Red Route runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so you can save the bridge stop for later in the day.
In foggy months, pick an afternoon slot. In October, take the morning and keep the afternoon for walking.
What changes when the clocks go back on 1 November?
Sunset moves an hour earlier, so a late-afternoon tour finishes in dusk or dark.
Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on 1 November 2026, per NIST. From that day the sun sets about an hour earlier on the clock. A tour that ended in daylight in October can end at dusk in November.
The 1:30 p.m. afternoon tour lasts 3.5 hours, so in November and December its last stop at Sutro Heights comes late in the day. If photos matter, pick a morning or midday departure from November.
Which tour works best in winter rain?
One with a roof. Vans and VW buses are closed; the Big Bus top deck is open to the weather.
The NPS describes winter as "occasional rain, cool weather, and overcast skies punctuated by brilliant sunshine". On a wet day, the open top deck of the Big Bus is the worst seat in town, and the lower deck has a smaller view.
The vintage VW tours, the vans and the Gray Line coach all have roofs. Skip the Bus runs four hours in a van with snacks, and the Movie Sights tour fills the drives with film clips. Every tour on our list has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so check the forecast the day before and move your booking if rain is coming.
Can you see the Golden Gate Bridge from a boat when it's foggy?
Sometimes, and the open ticket lets you wait for a clear hour.
The Golden Gate Bay Cruise sails under the bridge from Pier 43 1/2 in an hour. One guest in August wrote: "Clouds lifted as we crossed under it." The ticket is open, valid for a year, so you can pick the clearest hour on the day.
Bring a jacket. The water is windy in every season, and our what to wear guide covers layers by month.

One hour under the Golden Gate Bridge and past Alcatraz, on an open ticket.
